On Dec. 14, Maintenance Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment conducted a Troop event at the Maintenance Troop motor pool to reward Troopers for a year of hard at Fort Irwin, Calif.
On this chilly Friday Morning, Troopers went to work uncertain of what their Chain of Command had in store for them. They have heard rumors for weeks regarding an inflatable boxing ring and “pie in the face” fundraiser aimed to help lower the cost of tickets to the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment Annual Ball.
At 9 a.m. Troopers arrived to the motor pool. To their surprise, bright colorful inflatable attractions, made possible by the Army MWR, were setup just them. At first, Troopers stared at the inflatable boxing ring, miniature jousting arena, and sumo-wrestling ring with hesitation till the Commander called out challenges for Troopers to fight her in the boxing ring. 1st Sgt. Wayne Benton called for one on one match on the sumo mat. However, once a few brave Troopers accepted the challenge Troopers began to line up.
“No Trooper will step foot into their shops,” Capt. Camden Donnelly stressed to the platoon sergeants before formation. She believes “Troopers deserve a day to relax and have fun.”
Troopers socked each other with massive gloves, knocked their opponents off their balance on the jousting arena, and suited up in a large sumo suit pushing with all their force to get one outside the sumo mat. Troopers also played football with 1st Sgt. Benton.
“This event gave me the opportunity to get to know my Soldiers,” said Benton who took over as First Sergeant in Dec.
Around noon, Troopers were rallied into the bay for “pie in the face” fundraiser and bake sales which raised a grand total of $1,200.
“It was a great event, I wish we had more days like these, really was awesome,” said Spc. Kenneth Foster. Like always, when you are having fun the days seem to roll by faster. It is times like these when you wish time can slow down so everyone can savor the grins, the chuckles and the laughs that echoed in air.
